Nashville Web Design Review Series

Well, I’ve recently relaunched my design company and I’ve been taking a look at some of the other Nashville Web Design companies. I’ve mainly been looking at the big boys on the first Google page for Nashville Webdesign, because that where I want to be, and where I plan to get my site listed. I’ve had this site up a week or so, and am on page 12, which I’m happy with. I’m just getting a few things set up before I prepare my assault. I’m going to see how high I can get, and hopefully prove my skill.

But back to my competition.

Now, the first page has some nice sites, but also some really crappy ones. So over the next few days I’ll be doing a series of reviews on these top ten listed Nashville web design companies.

I’ll be judging them on four different criteria:

  1. Layout / Appearance
  2. SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
  3. Standards Compliant Design
  4. And how they look in a text only brower

I made the choice to only judge their main sites and not the sites they have designed. In my opinion, their site should represent some of their best work. I will briefly explain why I chose each of the criteria to judge them on.

Layout / Appearance
This is kind off obvious. How pleasing is the site? Does the color and layout work well? Is there anything that creates a problem?

SEO
This is search engine optimization. An area of internet marketing I am interested in. Basically, it involves coding your site so it is friendlier to search engines. The result is that you are more likely to rank higher. Is the SEO Ethical?

Standards Compliance
Basically, I’m going to run their site through the W3C checker to see how well coded the site is. The more errors there are, the sloppier the code. As a designer, you should make effort to reduce the number of mistakes and errors in your work.

Text Browser View
This is what the stripped down to text site will look like. This is very important. Why? One reason is because this is how search engines see the site. They don’t see images or colors or flash. Also, this is similar to the type of browsing used by handicap internet users. Consideration should be given to all visitor types.
