SEO and Internet Marketing are huge topics associated with launching a site, or just trying to increase your traffic. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and is the practice of coding a website so it is better received by search engines (and many times, better ranked).
The world of internet marking has White Hat and Black Hat SEO, and many shades in between. It is important for web owners to know there is a difference and the huge penalties associated with improper techniques. Google has been cracking down and deceptive methods of SEO can lead to a decrease in rankings, and sometimes a removal and ban from Google (definitely NOT a good thing).
A few methods used by Black Hat SEO designers:
These methods usually break search engine rules and are frowned upon. They do work as a short term solution at times and can artificially boost your ranking, but aren’t a smart move for anyone who wants long term success. Also, if Google notices (and they do often), your site can be heavily penalized.
It is important to ask any designer or internet marketer about their practices. A good resource for proper and ethical marketing can be found at Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. I consider these a must read for anyone with a website.
